Psalms 86–87
Great Is Your Steadfast Love
A Prayer of David.
86:1 Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my life, for I am godly;
save your servant, who trusts in you—you are my God.
3 Be gracious to me, O Lord,
for to you do I cry all the day.
4 Gladden the soul of your servant,
for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
6 Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer;
listen to my plea for grace.
7 In the day of my trouble I call upon you,
for you answer me.
8 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
nor are there any works like yours.
9 All the nations you have made shall come
and worship before you, O Lord,
and shall glorify your name.
10 For you are great and do wondrous things;
you alone are God.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD,
that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever.
13 For great is your steadfast love toward me;
you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
14 O God, insolent men have risen up against me;
a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
and they do not set you before them.
15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me;
give your strength to your servant,
and save the son of your maidservant.
17 Show me a sign of your favor,
that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.
Glorious Things of You Are Spoken
A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song.
87:1 On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
2 the LORD loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 Glorious things of you are spoken,
O city of God. Selah
4 Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;
behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush1—
“This one was born there,” they say.
5 And of Zion it shall be said,
“This one and that one were born in her”;
for the Most High himself will establish her.
6 The LORD records as he registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah
7 Singers and dancers alike say,
“All my springs are in you.”Footnotes

Probably Nubia (ESV)
Psalm 87 focus on God’s love for Zion (v1-3). Zion is another name for Jerusalem, and the focus is not so much on the buildings but on the people. Zion today that God loves are His people, the church of Jesus Christ.
The church is described as glorious (v3), not so much because of who we are, but because of God’s grace in His wonderful work of salvation. Being part of the church, the redeemed people of God, is a wonderful privilege and something to rejoice in. This sadly is not always the attitude of believers.
Zion was a city that other nations knew and took note of (v4). These pagan nations recognise God’s hand in the establishment of Zion (v5). The repeated phrase in this section, “This one was born there”, speaks of the nations recognising the great privilege of being born as part of God’s people. If we belong to God’s people, do other people see through our faith, living and witness that we are a blessed to be part of the people of God?
The song of the singers (v7) we might find very curious. The life of Jerusalem depended mainly on the Gihon spring. The song of the singers speaks of Jerusalem as a place of joyful refreshment. This today speaks of the refreshment that is to be found in Christ the water of life (John 7 v37-38). This is the greatest privilege of being part of God’s people, in the church through the means of grace being refreshed in Christ.
