Galatians 5:19–21
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy,1 drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do2 such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
(ESV)
Paul gives us here a list of sins that come from our fallen natures.
- Sexual immorality (porneia) – is any sort of sexual sin. All sexual activity outside a marriage between one man and woman is sinful. We must remember that Jesus said this can be sin in our minds. 2. Impurity (akatharsia) – is any moral impurity 3. Sensuality (aselgeia) – this is being controlled by wrong sexual passions. Paul has used three words to speak against sexual sin, emphasising the importance of avoiding it.
- Idolatry – this is worshipping idols, man-made objects. Our idols can be anything in life we put before God. 5. Sorcery – this is any form of witchcraft and today would include such things as charms and fortune telling.
- Enmity – hatred harboured towards others. 7. Strife – this includes quarrelling and being contentious. 8. Jealousy – this is having a wrong zeal burn us up as we see others have what we want. 9. Fits of anger – this is our passion boiling over so we lose control. 10. Rivalries – this has the idea of being unnecessarily provocative. 11. Dissensions – being unnecessarily divisive. 12. Envy – means literally to shrivel up inside out of ill-will towards others. Here we have seven sins about our relationships towards others.
- Drunkenness – being intoxicated and losing control. 14. Orgies – acting in an uncontrolled manner just following our fallen desires.
Pray through this list, confess where necessary and seek Christ’s cleansing.
