1 John 2:15–17

Do Not Love the World

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life1—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Footnotes

[1] 2:16 Or pride in possessions

(ESV)

As we continue John’s teaching about not loving the world, we need to consider some reasons given not to love the world. Firstly it blocks the love of the Father (v15b). If we agree with David that God’s steadfast love is better than life (Psalm 63 v3) then surely we don’t want to block that love.

Secondly we shouldn’t love the world as the source is not from the  Father (v16). The source of the evil in the world is the devil who wants to destroy and not from God who wants to give life and blessing.

Thirdly we aren’t to love the world as the things of the world are passing away (v17). So many of the things people live for, adore and spend so much time on will end with death. It is only being in a right relationship with God that guarantees eternal life and eternal blessing.

Take time to pray about how important the Father’s love is to experience

Pray about the ways you are loving the things of the world. Be honest with God about what things are more important in your life than the Father’s love. Repent and seek Christ’s grace and forgiveness.
