Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read Exodus 20 v1-7

Teaching by Rev. William Moody

All things about God need to be treated reverently including His Name (v7). Casualness in dealing with God is never appropriate. The story of Uzzah and how he was struck down dead for touching the Ark of the Covenant brings this home (see 2 Samuel 6 v5-9).

God’s name must always be used properly and this of course means never being used as a swear word. When others use the Lord’s name irreverently around us, what should we do? This calls for great wisdom but also at times great courage. Someone has said, “Silence is golden, but sometimes it is yellow.”

Breaking this commandment though also includes thoughtfulness when we use God’s name in prayer and in praise. We must think about what we’re saying or singing and use our words about God thoughtfully, respectfully and lovingly. This is not easy and needs great concentration, particularly when we sing familiar words. This is why it is good before a service to read what you are going to later sing.

We need to pray for grace to love God’s name more and to deal with His wonderful names with utmost reverence.
