Exodus 20:8–11

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

The fourth commandment in keeping the Sabbath Day holy (v8-11) is probably the commandment which today sees much greater variation in how Christians keep it compared to a few decades ago. Sadly, the much more casual way many Christians approach Sunday, is not down to a new understanding of God’s command but the commercialisation of Sunday by the world around us. We must be very careful not to just go with the flow.

Keeping the Sabbath Day was a command from God from the very beginning of the world and it is to be a day of wonderful blessing in God’s presence. In how much we delight in keeping the Sabbath Day holy or not, will speak greatly about how much we love God and being in His presence (Isaiah 58 v13-14). Is knowing God the real source of joy in your life?

Notice how this commandment also includes not causing servants to work. Today this will apply to not going to shops or restaurants on the Sabbath so as to not to cause others to work for us. If they work for others we can do nothing about this, but we can prevent them working for us

Pray for a renewed love and respect for the Sabbath in your life.
