Zephaniah 1:7–9

The Day of the Lord Is Near

  Be silent before the Lord GOD!
    For the day of the LORD is near;
  the LORD has prepared a sacrifice
    and consecrated his guests.
  And on the day of the LORD’s sacrifice—
  “I will punish the officials and the king’s sons
    and all who array themselves in foreign attire.
  On that day I will punish
    everyone who leaps over the threshold,
  and those who fill their master’s1 house
    with violence and fraud.

[1] 1:9 Or their Lord’s

(ESV)

In a world of busyness we need to take time to be still before the Lord and consider who He is and what He does (v7). Casualness in spiritual matters comes from not taking time to seriously focus on who God is.

Here we being encouraged to consider how God prepares a sacrifice and being sacrificed will be officials and the king’s sons (v8). Leaders have particular responsibilities and will face greater judgment than others. Pray for those in leadership over you in the church and within government.

God’s problem here is that the princes of Judah were following the ways of the pagan countries around them instead of God’s truth (v8). Here we see this brings down God’s wrath.

Leaping over the threshold (v9) probably comes from superstition from the Philistines (see 1 Samuel 5). Believers need to be constantly examining what they do and why they do it. Do we do what we do because of God’s word or are we being influenced by the world around us.
