Teaching by Rev. William Moody
Prophecy often has different layers to it. Sometimes the fulfilment of the same prophecy can be partly in the short term and sometimes the same prophecy can also have a long-term fulfilment.
This prophecy could have partial fulfilment in the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 but the main fulfilment will be at the end of the world when Jesus returns. Another challenge in prophecy is determining what will be fulfilled literally and what is symbolic. In this prophecy will the Mount of Olives actually be split in two, will there be a river flow out of Jerusalem will there be these battles that are spoken of? Or is what is being spoken of here to be understood as symbolic of Christ’s final victory over His enemies and His wonderful blessing coming on His people?
Whatever way we interpret this chapter, the important thing is that it speaks clearly of Christ’s victory over all nations and the importance of being part of the faithful people of God.
God’s final great goal for this world is summed up in the inscription “Holy to the Lord” (v20). Be in no doubt God’s awesome power will bring about His complete victory over evil, and we need to be sure we’re ready for that day.
