Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read Revelation 3
Teaching by Rev. William Moody
Sardis was surrounded by high cliffs which led to carelessness about being defeated. This resulted in it twice being conquered by surprise attack.
Jesus is ‘Him who has the seven spirits of God‘ (v1a). This speaks of the perfect work of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual life which He gives.
Jesus gives a condemning verdict, ‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.’ (v1b). A good reputation among people does not guarantee a good reputation before God.
Jesus calls this church to do several crucial things: –
- Wake up (v2a) – carelessness has seeped into church life. There is a call for watchfulness and to face the reality of their danger.
- Strengthen what remains (v2b) – this is urgent because the little signs of life are about to disappear. Life needs to be protected and nurtured.
- Remember and keep what you received (v3a) – this is an expression about the Gospel. The church needs to be reminded of the Gospel and have it as their central focus. The Gospel we have is Jesus.
- Repent (v3b) – this is a change of heart and mind, turning from sin to Christ. Jesus is coming like a thief, we must be ready. Pray about this.
