The women of Israel are likened to cows that will be taken into captivity with a hook in their nose (v1-3). People who live for themselves and for their luxuries need to be warned that God will judge.

The Lord speaks of how these people loved their worship (v4-5), but that did not make what they did or who they were acceptable to God. If our worship does not lead to a life of consistent obedience to the Lord, then God does not take joy in our worship.

The Lord speaks of five situations of trial He has brought on His people (v6-11) so that they would come back to Him. But each time He finishes with the words, “yet you did not return to me.” Here we see the stubbornness of the human heart. Is your heart stubborn?

If the people will not come back to the Lord, He warns that He will come to them (v12). People can only ignore God for so long. God call on people to take time to consider who the Lord is (v13), the God of hosts.
