Ephesians 6:1–4

Children and Parents

6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(ESV)

In continuing his theme on the family Paul now refers to the relationship between parents and their children.

Children are to obey their parents because it is ‘right’, it is naturally the right thing to do (v1). Paul highlights how honouring parents includes a God given promise (v2-3). We cannot expect blessing in life if we refuse to honour and respect our parents.

In speaking to parents fathers are singled down in regards to the responsibility to teach and discipline (v4). This is because as head of the home, the father who has the greater responsibility to teach and discipline. Fathers are also singled out because often they are the most negligent in teaching their children.

In teaching and disciplining we are to do so as Christ would do it.

Parents are you being faithful in bringing your children up in God’s ways?

Pray for families, pray for parents and children, that they will by God’s grace fulfil their responsibilities in a God honouring manner.
