Verse 1 sets the scene for this short letter. It is from the apostle Paul, who at this time was in prison for the sake of the gospel probably in Rome. The letter is to a Christian man called Philemon who is part of the church in Colosse, although others are also mentioned. It is possible that this letter was sent along with the letter to the Colossians.

The greeting (v3) shows the great concern of Paul’s life, that others would know the reality and blessing of God in their lives. This should be our great concern for others that they might know the grace and peace that Jesus alone can bring. Pray for those close to you to experience Christ more and more.

Verses 4-7 give us an insight into Paul’s prayer life. He was always mentioning these people in his prayers. This is the same thing that he said to many others to whom he wrote to, showing that he must have spent a lot of his time in praying for others. Do you spend much time praying for others, even those far away?

Paul’s praying wasn’t boring, but something exciting as he saw these people develop in their Christian lives and in service of God. We need the help of God’s Spirit to have such a caring and dynamic prayer life. Take some time to speak to the Lord about the state of your prayer life.
