When we rely on anything other than the Lord, then we are destined for major disappointment. In disobedience to the Lord’s command a group of people from Judah have gone to Egypt to find security. But this chapter is all about how this great and mighty nation of Egypt will suffer judgment. Hence the great foolishness of the people of Judah in hiding here.

This poem speaks of how despite the might and splendour of Egypt, they will suffer a terrible defeat at the hand of the Babylonians (v3-6). The army of Egypt had advance with much hope (v7-9), but it ended being a day of God’s judgment (v10) and there is no medicine to soothe (v11).

It is made declare that while Babylon was used, it is the Lord who brought Egypt down (v14-19). so it is that today, nothing happens in world events except through the sovereign actions of the Lord. God brings people down and raises them up.

Again, as is often the case, the Lord brings a message of hope for His faithful people, they will not be consumed, a remnant will be preserved (v27-28). What we see here is what we see in this wicked world, God exercises wrath and judgment, but also grace and mercy to His chosen people.
