Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read 2 Kings 2
Teaching by Rev. William Moody
Elisha knows his master Elijah is going to be taken to heaven and will not leave him, no matter how far they travel (v1-8). Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit which would be granted of Elisha witnessed Elijah’s departure (v9-10). The double portion was the inheritance a first-born son would receive which was double what other children would get. Elisha is longing for the same God-given power that blessed Elijah’s ministry.
Elijah’s departure was truly amazing (v11-12). The chariots of fire, speak of the glory of heaven and God’s power to take His people there.
Elisha, in crossing the Jordan (v14, see v8), healing the water (v19-22) and punishing the irreverent boys (v23-24), is proving the power to be a prophet and Elijah’s successor had come to him.
It is important for us to ask if we have the Spirit of God and of power working clearly in our lives proving we belong to Christ (1 Tim. 1 v7)? Pray about this.
