1 John 5:10–12

10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

(ESV)

There are two types of people spoken of here. There are those who believe in Jesus and have the testimony of the Spirit within assuring them of its truth (v10a). Then there are those who do not believe and who therefore make God out to be a liar regarding the Gospel (v10b). There is no middle ground and unbelief is a very serious sin.

The Spirit assures of eternal life and that this is realised only in God’s Son the Lord Jesus (v11). Jesus said that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14 v6). He is not a life but ‘the’ life, the only source of eternal life.

John makes this very clear (v12), true life, everlasting life, eternal life is only found in Jesus. All life outside it is a false, temporary life which leads to eternal death. The life Jesus brings is not just everlasting, it is of different quality, it is life to the full (John 10 v10), it is life in a relationship with Christ (John 17 v3). In speaking of this life with Christ, Paul considered everything else as rubbish. Is your life with Jesus of such richness? Pray about this.
