1 John 2:12–14

12   I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.
13   I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
  I write to you, children,
    because you know the Father.
14   I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

John speaks here of different groups within the church. To the little children John speaks of them having been forgiven their sins (v12) and of them knowing the Father (13c). These are the basic elements of being a Christian.

The fathers (13a & 14a) are obviously those of more mature faith. Knowing again is being emphasised. Christianity is about relationship. They are described as knowing Him Who is from the Beginning, speaking of Jesus’ eternal nature. This same phrase is repeated (v14a) emphasising its importance.

Young men are described as being victorious and strong (v13b & 14b). They have overcome the evil one (v13b), so they have known victory in Jesus. Overcoming the evil one is repeated (v14b) but what is added is the Word of God that abides within.

Love and light comes through knowing God through Jesus and this happens through the Word abiding within. The word abiding within brings salvation and enables the believer to have victory over the devil and sin.

Through the word abiding within you, are you growing in your knowledge of Jesus and through this becoming stronger against sin and temptation?
