Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read Judges 5

Teaching by Rev. William Moody

Deborah and Barak sing in this song of victory and the lord is pictured as marching out in might and glory (v3-5). The situation in the country before the Lord’s deliverance was very dire (v6-8). Things though did change as the leaders and commanders follow the Lord’s call (v2, 9).

Songs are important in remembering the Lord’s deliverance but also in stirring people up for future exploits (v10-12). The song recounts those who were faithful in coming to battle (v13-15a, 18-19). It is important to commend and encourage people who have been faithful.

Sadly though, the song has to speak of those who failed to answer the call for battle (v15b-17, 23). While many rolled up their sleeves, others preferred their own safety and comfort. There is a challenge for us all to consider how willing are we to engage in the spiritual battle for the Gospel?

We get a clue as to how the Israelites were victorious, it was through the Lord sending a flood down the Kishon River (v21). In answering the call to the work of God’s kingdom, we have a great privilege to be a part of and to witness what the Lord is doing. Those who don’t answer the call miss out on so much.

The death of Sisera is focused on in the final part of the song (v24-30). Those who oppose the Lord will come to a terrible end (v31). God’s people one day will be delivered from all wickedness and opposition.
