One of the reasons the Lord allows trials to come into our lives, is for God to reveal something of His greatness as He brings us through these difficult days. With the Midianite invasion of Israel, it is the Lord’s desire to reveal to His people something of His greatness.

The Lord is very aware, that if the large Israelite army of 32,000 men defeated the Midianites, they would believe it was themselves who achieved this (v1-3). Even 10,000 would still be able to take the credit and so the army is reduced to 300 (v4-8). These 300 were probably the most watchful, determined from how they drank water. With just 300 the great victory could only be put down to the Lord (v19-25).

Even when people have faith in the Lord, their faith needs to be strengthened. The Lord caused this to happen through the overhearing of the Midianites conversation (v9-18). We have a wonderfully gracious Lord who is prepared to be patient with our weaknesses and give us the grace and encouragement to be faithful so as to see the Lord do great things.
