There are so many good points about this pagan Roman Centurion (v5) that serves as a great example to us. He is greatly concerned about his servant (v6) which shows love; he doesn’t want Jesus to come into his house which shows humility (v7-8); he has great confidence that Jesus can heal even from a distance (v9).

Examine yourself to see if you have similar love, humility and faith. Take time to pray about this.

Jesus marvels at the centurion because he hadn’t the privileges of those brought up among God’s people, yet displays such great faith (v10). Jesus speaks of how outsiders will be brought in (v11), while those on the inside will be rejected (v12).

Being part of God’s people, the church, is never enough for salvation. Being part of the church and even professing to be saved in themselves guarantees nothing. We need to be born again (John 3 v3) and to show the reality of that rebirth in our lives with faith and repentance being clearly evident. It is not membership to the church, but a true relationship with Christ that saves. Is that relationship alive in your life?
