As Paul continues on this subject of divisions within the church he rebukes the members for their immaturity (v1-4). Paul is saying that the way they have behaved, shows that they have not spiritually grown up and are unable to take in good solid spiritual food.

Paul shows the foolishness of dividing over personalities by showing that any blessing and growth within a church, it comes ultimately from the work of God and not of any person (v5-9). While it is important to respect people who work in the Gospel, we should never hero worship any person.

Paul elaborates on the way a church is formed and grows and while Paul as an apostle has an important role (v10), he wants to focus on the foundation who has to be Jesus (vii).

How we built on Jesus has to be Biblical and according to God’s will. The Day of Judgment can show that so much that was done within church was useless, as it wasn’t building properly on Christ (v12-15).

The nature of the church as a spiritual temple is important (v16-17) and reminds us that it is not like any other human organisation. The church belongs to Christ and within the church people need to follow the wisdom of God rather than the wisdom of the world (v18-23).
