Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read John 11
Teaching by Rev. William Moody
Jesus wept (v35) but we’re then told that He is greatly moved a second time (v38). Was it the statement by the people (v37) that troubled Him? Jesus never takes the pain of His children lightly.
What Jesus asks to be done next appeared crazy to the people and even to the sisters (v39). Jesus is asking Martha not to look with sight but with faith (v40). When we look at situations of great need it is so easy to just look with the eyes of sight, the challenge is to look with the eyes of faith in what the Lord is able to do.
Jesus’ prayer reveals to us the closeness of the relationship between the Father and the Son (v41-42). What Jesus was doing was not just for the good of Lazarus but to produce faith. This is the purpose of all of John’s Gospel (see John 20 v30-31). By dwelling on Jesus’ deeds, faith is produced.
The amazing power of Christ revealed here (v43-44) shows His power over death. This power will be revealed at the end when all people will be raised, the saved to everlasting glory and the unsaved to everlasting glory. The power of resurrection revealed here is the same power needed in raising dead sinners to spiritual life. The spiritually dead are made alive.
