While seeking a king was not in God’s will, God graciously still prepares Saul for this new role by giving a new heart (v9) and then sending the Holy Spirit upon Saul (v10). The people recognise a change that has come on Saul (v1113). Later on we will see how Saul would be rejected as king because of his sin, but here we see he was given great privileges by God.

When God calls us to a task He will prepare us. We need a right heart to serve for God’s glory. We need the Spirit of God to come upon us to empower us to serve according to God’s will. We recognise that while in ourselves we are weak in Christ we can be strong.

Saul’s uncle questions him about what has happened but Saul remains quiet about the anointing as King (v14-16). Was this modesty or maybe was it Saul being uncomfortable in his new role. Saul was having a great responsibility placed on him which he felt overwhelmed by.

His problem in later years would be that he would lose this sense of modesty and smallness about himself and instead become too big for his boots. It is important that we trust that God can use us in our weakness but when God does, let’s remain humble and never become too full of ourselves.
