Job speaks on the subject of finding wisdom in this chapter. Derek Thomas says, “It has been a failure to understand the ways of God that has caused Job the most trouble.” Job needed wisdom to navigate these challenging times.

He speaks of how silver, gold, iron and sapphires are taken from the depths of the earth (v1-6). Great effort is made by man to find these metals and gems and to bring them to the surface.

The skills involved in these processes were what great birds and beasts knew nothing about (v7-8). Job outlines more of this process (v9-11). All this work and effort is put for these treasures, but still wisdom can’t be found (v12-14; 20-22). Neither can this wisdom be bought and it is more precious than any precious metal or gem (15-19).

Wisdom is to be found in God and is evident in His great works of ruling over this world (v23-27). It is a fear of the Lord and a turning away from evil that brings wisdom and understanding (v28). Wisdom is found in knowing the Lord, His character, His ways and His truth. How important is wisdom to you?
