The response of the people to the reading and teaching of God’s Word was dramatic (v9). The people were moved to tears as they were mourning their sin. Does the reading and teaching of God’s word so move you? When is the last time you wept for your sin?

God’s word is powerful but not always comfortable. We need to pray that through the Holy Spirit that God has a real dealing with us through His Word.

There is a place for mourning but Nehemiah is encouraging them to find also joy in the Lord (v10). One of the great needs of the church today alongside conviction for sin is a renewed joy in Christ. This comes as we grow in our knowledge of Jesus and understand more of His grace. Have you this joy?

It was through a right understanding of God’s Word that the people came to a position of peace (v11-12). The sending portions (v12), probably refers to gifts for the poor. Their blessing from God led to generosity of spirit towards others. They were changed in response to understanding God’s word.

When is the last time you acted differently because of what God was teaching you through His word? Is the word alive to you? Pray about this!
