Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read Luke 5
Teaching by Rev. William Moody
Jesus knew the great need of people was hearing the word of God and so He took every opportunity to teach in every location. Here His pulpit was a boat (v1-3). We need to be praying and seeking opportunity regularly to help people hear God’s Word. Pray about family, friends, neighbours who don’t regularly hear God’s word.
Jesus then asks Simon and others to go fishing (v4) and they initially are reluctant as they have had an unprofitable night fishing (v5). But in the end when they obey they get a great catch (v6-7).
Simon’s response is wonderful and so appropriate (v8-9). Simon knew that not only was He in the presence of greatness, He knew that He had questioned someone as great as Jesus about what He was asking.
Can we be like this, instead of with faith immediately obeying God’s word, we question what God says and even give the suggestion that we know better? Maybe like Simon you need to confess your sin in this regard.
Simon’s humility paves the way for him and others to embark on a much greater task (v10-11). May we know God’s grace to be fishers of men.
