In the man possessed by evil spirits we see the terrible consequences of evil in the misery it brings (v26-29). Evil dresses itself up as something attractive and beneficial for us, but ultimately all evil and all sin leads to suffering.

This man was possessed by not one but by man evil spirits (v30). Demon possession is not very common today but it still can happen. In demon possession the person’s personality is taken over. It normally happens when people open the door through involvement in occultic practices.

These demons knew who Jesus was (v28) and they knew their ultimate destiny in the abyss that is hell (v31). Jesus allows the demons to enter some pigs that are then destroyed by drowning (v32-33).

We need to realise that the forces of evil will seek to destroy us and it is only in Christ that we can have a victory over them. Jesus at the cross brings sinners back to God through His death and thus He breaks the devil’s power over them (see Colossians 2 v13-15).
