Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org.
Please read Genesis 20.
As you read this story you might have a sense of déjà vu as there is a very similar story in Genesis 12 involving Abraham, Sarah and the King of Egypt. Sadly Abraham is not learning and is repeating his mistake. Abraham tells Abimelech the king of Gerar that Sarah was his sister (v1-2). Abimelech therefore takes Sarah to be his wife (v2b) only to get a frightening shock (v3).
In days of so much immorality, we must remember that God’s standards do not change. All sexual activity outside of a marriage between one man and one woman are sinful and that which is sinful brings God’s judgment.
Abimelech had been preserved from having a physical relationship out of God’s grace (v4-6). We are told today that the loving thing is to allow and accept whatever people want to do sexually. The loving thing is for people to be preserved from sinful activity.
Abimelech is told that Abraham is a prophet who will pray for him (v7). Abimelech then rebukes Abraham for what he did (v8-10).
Sadly, due to his sin Abraham who was to be a blessing to the nations was in danger of bringing God’s curse upon these people. Christians are to be a blessing to others but if we live sinful we will instead be a curse to them!
