Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read Exodus 21
Teaching by Rev. William Moody
The Bible is often condemned for condoning slavery. In response we need to realise that slavery in Israel was very different from many other forms of slavery. What the Lord gives (v1-11) are rules to protect slaves. Slavery also was a preferred option to a family in great poverty facing starvation.
A person could only be a slave for six years, on the seventh year they were set free (v2). The slave will leave in the same marital situation as when he entered, any wife or children he acquired will belong to the master (v3-4).
If the slave doesn’t want this he can remain a slave forever to stay with his new family (v5-6).
In a world where women were greatly disrespected, clear commands are given to protect female slaves (v7-11).
Slavery was never ideal and people would enter into only when they were in a terrible situation with little other choice. God’s commands were not for a world that was perfect but for a world of much imperfection to help and protect people in dark days.
In the trials we face it is wonderful to know that we have the God who rules and overrules in what happens for our good and to give a blessed future. We trust Jesus who frees from the ultimate slavery of sin.
