David makes preparation to bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem (v1). This time David is careful to follow the instructions led down in the book of the law (v2). all Israel gathers for this occasion (v3), but this times it is the priests and the Levites who will take the lead (v4-11).

David, the priests and Levites this time treat the ark with the respect it deserved (v12-15). This was a great musical procession, one of praise and celebration (v16-24). Reverence, praise, celebration are key aspects of the proper worship of the Lord.

Sacrifices were made (v25-26), again highlighting their reverence and thanksgiving. David, wearing a linen ephod (v27), was wearing the clothes of a priest. This was surely a picture, pointing forward to the future priest-king who would travel into Jerusalem on a donkey.

David’s wife Michal, was not impressed with the sight of her husband celebrating and dancing before the ark (v19). She despised his passion and total commitment to this worship.

We learn from this today how our worship needs to be reverent, obedient, but also passionate. This is what the Lord seeks of His people.
