Ephesians 6:10–17

The Whole Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

Paul focuses on the important subject of spiritual warfare. Believers need to be aware that they wrestle not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of the devil (v10-12). This means this battle has to be fought with spiritual weapons and not physical weapons.

This is a truth that Christians can neglect and today seek to attract the unsaved in with entertainment and the ways of the world rather than through spiritual means.

The devil has his schemes (v11), his methods and tricks in order to trip up believers. Do you accept that the devil is actively planning to trip you up?

The pieces of God’s armour for His people are:-

Piece 1: the belt of truth is an overall knowledge of the Word

Piece 2: The Breastplate of righteousness, which is about the heart, affections and thinking being protected by the truth of justification through faith.

Piece 3: The Shoes of the Gospel of peace, which is about our feet being protected and secure so we have stability and readiness to serve as we focus on the truth of the gospel.

Piece 4: The shield of faith, it is about faith resting on God’s word and the truth contained in it.

Piece 5: The Helmet of salvation, which is about our heads, our life and energy being protected as we focus on the truth about salvation.

Piece 6: The Sword of the Spirit – is about particular truths of the word being used in particular situations.
