Song of Solomon 2

2:1   I am a rose1 of Sharon,
    a lily of the valleys.

He

  As a lily among brambles,
    so is my love among the young women.

She

  As an apple tree among the trees of the forest,
    so is my beloved among the young men.
  With great delight I sat in his shadow,
    and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
  He brought me to the banqueting house,2
    and his banner over me was love.
  Sustain me with raisins;
    refresh me with apples,
    for I am sick with love.
  His left hand is under my head,
    and his right hand embraces me!
  I adjure you,3 O daughters of Jerusalem,
    by the gazelles or the does of the field,
  that you not stir up or awaken love
    until it pleases.

The Bride Adores Her Beloved

  The voice of my beloved!
    Behold, he comes,
  leaping over the mountains,
    bounding over the hills.
  My beloved is like a gazelle
    or a young stag.
  Behold, there he stands
    behind our wall,
  gazing through the windows,
    looking through the lattice.
10   My beloved speaks and says to me:
  “Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
    and come away,
11   for behold, the winter is past;
    the rain is over and gone.
12   The flowers appear on the earth,
    the time of singing4 has come,
  and the voice of the turtledove
    is heard in our land.
13   The fig tree ripens its figs,
    and the vines are in blossom;
    they give forth fragrance.
  Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
    and come away.
14   O my dove, in the clefts of the rock,
    in the crannies of the cliff,
  let me see your face,
    let me hear your voice,
  for your voice is sweet,
    and your face is lovely.
15   Catch the foxes5 for us,
    the little foxes
  that spoil the vineyards,
    for our vineyards are in blossom.”
16   My beloved is mine, and I am his;
    he grazes6 among the lilies.
17   Until the day breathes
    and the shadows flee,
  turn, my beloved, be like a gazelle
    or a young stag on cleft mountains.7

(ESV)

Saying she was ‘a rose of Sharon’ (v1), was not the bride boasting but rather she saw herself like many other common flowers, and she wonders why she is loved by her husband. But her husband sees her as outstanding among others (v2). She in return sees her husband as someone outstanding and longs for his blessing (v3).

The bride looks forward to her wedding day (v4-5) and her wedding night (v6). She knows that this will be a time of unequalled joy due to who her husband is. She encourages the other women not to settle for some made up love experience but to seek the real thing that she has (v7).

The joy and peace the believer experiences in the love of Christ is truly unequalled by any love that can be received from this world. We need to therefore see this relationship with Christ as our deepest priority.

The bride describes her groom as being like a gazelle or young stag bounding over the hills, making every effort to come and be with his bride (v8-9). The groom calls on his bride to come away with him and experience an exclusive love (v10). The winter is past and now is the time for a richer period of greater blessing (v11-17). This is like a return to the days of Paradise as experienced by Adam and Eve with the Lord.

Christ is truly devoted to having a deep and blessed relationship with you, you can see this from the cross. In return how devoted are you to having such a deep relationship with Christ?

We have to watch out for the little foxes (v15), the things that can creep in and spoil our relationship with Christ. What comes to your mind?
