In the early part of this chapter there is an emphasis on God overruling what happens. Verse 1 is not simple to understand but the sense of God overruling seems to be the meaning. We’re encouraged to commit our way to the Lord for our plans to be fulfilled (v3). Success is always in God’s hands and not ours. In all that happens God is working out His plans and purposes and we must seek to fit into these (v4). People plan and organise, but in the end God will sees His will being done (v9).

There is also a focus on the rule of a king (v10-15). The king spoken of here surely points to Jesus who does not sin in His judgment (v10). His kingdom is established with righteousness (v12). Therefore, the king loves the righteous to approach him (v13). It should be our great desire to know the blessing and delight of the King of kings (v14-15).

The big question is how can we be righteous and how can we have our sin covered? The answer is found in steadfast love and faithfulness (v6), but it is not our steadfast love and faithfulness ultimately but what was displayed in the ministry, life and death of Jesus.
