Wisdom is something that needs to be actively sought (v1-4). Growing in wisdom has to be seen as our life’s work. True wisdom will lead to a fear and knowledge of God (v5). Knowing God and His ways are not merely theoretical activities but rather something so practical for life.

In acquiring wisdom what is needed is not a good thinking brain, but rather a desire to live with integrity before God (v6-10). Wisdom is a gift from God and He will only give it to those who are serious about following Him.

One reason for this is that the whole purpose of wisdom is to help the believer walk in the way of righteous and avoid the way of evil (v11-15).

One particular temptation very relevant to a young man is highlighted, the danger of the adulteress (v16-19). Here we see very clearly the enticing nature of sin and yet how it leads to destruction. Wisdom is so needed because sin and temptation are so subtle and persuasive.

In following wisdom, we need the encouragement of seeing the final outcome (v20-22). There is blessing for the wise and disaster for the foolish.
