The king’s cupbearer and baker arrive in prison for offending their master (v1-4). Both men had dreams and were dejected as they could not understand them (v5-8). Joseph has great confidence in the Lord being able to bring clarity into their situations (v9). It is important believers have a similar confidence today. In a world that is so often confused and dejected let us confidently declare that in God’s word people will find the clarity and understanding that they need about life.

The cupbearer’s dream is explained by Joseph to mean he would be restored to his former position in three days (v9-13). Joseph asks for the cupbearer to speak on his behalf when delivered (v14-15). The baker is encouraged and shares his dream (v16-17). Joseph explains that for him in three days he will be executed (v18-19).

Although the message was not pleasant, Joseph shares the truth and the whole truth. As God’s people today, we need to share all of the truths of the gospel, the message of sin and judgement as well as of grace and mercy.

What Joseph said came true (v20-22) but sadly he remains forgotten (v23).
