Teaching by Rev. William Moody
Sometimes a pair of outside eyes looking into our situation can be a great help for us to see things clearly. Jethro sees the danger of Moses leading by himself bringing harm to himself and to the people (v13-14).
Leadership is not meant to be a task for just a single person in the Bible. Even Jesus chose 12 disciples to come alongside Him. Paul’s ministry was normally as part of a team. There is great strength in partnership in leadership.
Jethro proposes a pattern of leadership (v15-23) with other leaders being appointed over groups varying from tens to thousands. These leaders will settle the simpler cases while Moses will deal with that which is more complicated.
The result of this will be Moses enduring in leadership and the people knowing peace in their lives and relationships (v23). So Moses introduces this new pattern of leadership (v24-27) which would be a forerunner to the New Testament pattern of multiple elders and deacons.
Paul expands on this thinking by speaking of the church as a body with each part having a part to play (see 1 Corinthians 12). Are you actively and seriously playing your part in serving in the body of Christ? Pray about this.
