Teaching by Rev. William Moody
The prophesy against the great trading port of Tyre continues in this chapter with a poem. The first section speaks of Tyre’s beauty and richness which came from it trading with nations right across the world (v3-25). There is great detail given here about the nations Tyre traded with and the vast merchandise that came into it and made it so rich. Tyre was very rich and very beautiful and it knew it. We know what pride comes before…
What happens to Tyre is pictured like a great storm taking its trading ships, crew and merchandise down to the depths of the sea from where there will be no return (v26-27).
There will be a great mourning among the nations, pilots and traders (v28-36). Some of these verses speak of great shock among the nations, partly no doubt at the severity of the judgment on Tyre, but also no doubt because the impact on these nations who relied so much on Tyre for trade.
Here is a crucial lesson for ourselves, our trust needs to be in the Lord alone. Yes we need to be wise, to work hard and make sensible provision for ourselves and our families, but our trust should not be in the money we earn and save, or the possessions we buy. All these can disappear (Psalm 46 v1-2).
