John begins his Gospel by calling Jesus the ‘Word’. Words reveal who a person is. Jesus as the ‘Word’ reveals what God is like.

The Word was there at the beginning of this world (v1). He is eternal and not someone created. He is described as being with or towards God, which speaks of a real and living relationship with God.

But as well as being with God, He is God (v1b). This speaks of the Trinity, the one God with three persons. God has this amazing relationship of immeasurable love, between the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.

John now emphasises that this Word is the Creator of all (v2-3). We don’t live in a world that exists by chance, we live in a world that was designed and created by God. God made this world so we can know Him.

You can know God only through Jesus the Word, He is the light of men (v4). The next verse (v5) begins to reveal a tension. There is conflict as the people of this world seek to overcome the Word, to fight against Him.

Are you resisting or accepting the Word who is Christ? Have you a longing to know God and to know Him deeper? Do you have a love for the scriptures, the Word of God which bring Christ to you? Pray about this!
