Jesus helps us to understand something about rebirth and why it is absolutely essential if we’re going to enter heaven one day (v3). The flesh gives birth to flesh (v6), in other words fallen sinners will produce fallen sinners with corrupt natures opposed to Christ.

Being good and being religious might change us outwardly will not take away the fallen nature that we are born with inwardly.

The Spirit gives birth to the Spirit (v6), in other words the Holy Spirit has to produce in the sinner a new spiritual nature that will love Christ. This is the only hope of true inward transformation and salvation.

This rebirth is not something we produce or even help happen in any way but is down to the Sovereign action of God’s Spirit (v7-8). Like the blowing of the wind, we don’t see Him moving, but we see the result of Him moving.

This proves that salvation is all of grace and totally down to God from start to finish. Our contribution is the sin which made it necessary. Have you been born again by the Spirit of God? We know we’re born again if we have been brought to true faith in Jesus, God’s sent Son (v16).
