Apologies, but we couldn't display this passage from ESV.org. Please read John 8
Teaching by Rev. William Moody
This situation of the woman being caught in adultery has all the hallmarks of a set up (v1-4). How did they discover the woman in the act? Why is she here and not the man?
The likelihood is that this situation was arranged to put Jesus in a dilemma. If Jesus didn’t condemn He would have been accused of failing to uphold God’s law (v5). If Jesus did condemn and was part of this woman being stoned, He would have faced a negative response from the people as well as from the Roman authorities.
Jesus’ response is wonderful (v6). Was He giving himself time to think? Was He not gazing at the woman to avoid temptation? I wonder what was He writing? Was it a Bible verse?
Jesus’ answer (v7) reveals the hypocrisy of the accusers (v8-9). Why did the older ones leave first, had they more sin?
Jesus’ words to the woman (v10-11) show love, but also no compromise with sin. He hates the sin but loves the sinner.
